Lesson 18 The Woman caught in the Act of Adultery John 8:1-11
Jesus is in the Temple. John says that he is sitting down, indicating that he is teaching. He is interrupted by the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees bringing to him a woman caught sleeping with a man who wasn’t her husband. They make her stand in the middle of the crowd and ask Jesus what he has to say about it. They feel confident that this would be a big problem for Jesus because Jesus is bound to break at least One law: a) if he says that the woman should be stoned to death, he would break the Roman Law because the Roman law did not allow the Jews to punish a person by death b) if Jesus says that the woman should not be stoned to death, then he would break the Law of Moses. But this situation wasn’t a problem to Jesus. He just bent down and wrote something on the ground and then declared: ‘Let the one who is without sin throw the first stone’ He presented the religious leaders with a problem. The Jews believed that only God is good. If they said that they were without sin then they would be unpopular with the crowd, so they all walked away. Jesus told the woman, Go and sin no more’.
